Suzanne Fitzgerald - Varsity Head Coach
Coach_Suzanne_FitzgeraldSuzanne is in her ninth year of coaching club volleyball. She recently moved from Northern California where she was the head Varsity coach at Shasta High School (2000-2002). She also coached at the Power 15s, 16s and 17s level (1999-2003) in the NCVA region. In 2001, her 17s finished top 10 in the region.

After moving to Atlanta in the summer of '03, Suzanne obtained a head coaching job at Lakeview Academy in Gainesville, Georgia. During her tenure ('04) at the school, she lead the team to a 27-5 season. That same year, she joined forces with Vertical One and took the 14-1s team to a top ten qualifier finish (tied 9th) at Big South.

In 2005, she coached the JV team at Northview High School, where her team finished with a 24-4 record. She then joined the varsity team and assisted as they went on to win the 05' State Championship (AAAAA).

In 2006, she moved from Northview to take on the head coaching position at Walton. The Lady Raiders made their first appearance at State in 06' since 2002. The Lady Raiders made it to the first round--but their fairy tale ended abruptly with a first-round loss to Chattahoochee in five sets. In 2007, the Lady Raiders again made a statement as Area Runner-Ups and Finshing in the Elite Eight before finishing to eventual State Finalists--Kennesaw Mountain.

Coming off of a tremendous 2009 season where the Lady Raiders finished 2nd in the State in the 5A division, Fitzgerald is eager to develop the new young talent coming in this year.

Suzanne is an English teacher at Walton High School, has two children, Celeste (10--who also qualified and played in Dallas this summer with A5 12 Dan) and Caden (4 1/2--who can become any superhero in the blink of an eye). Other interesting facts--she was a Marine. She loves sushi, prefers sunflowers to roses, mountains to the ocean and a relaxing game of hangman to any sort of entertainment. Ultimately, Suzanne is committed and convinced to the philosophy that volleyball is the best medium in which to train young women for the game of life.

Linda Lager - JV Assistant and Royal Raiders Head Coach

Coach_Linda_LagerLinda is a graduate of Walton High School and a former member of the Lady Raider volleyball program. She was a Setter for Walton and still holds a couple of state setting records. She was part of two of the State Championship teams and went on to play at Birmingham-Southern College in Birmingham, AL where she was turned into a Libero. Upon graduation in 2007, Linda earned her Bachelors degree in Business Administration with a minor in Studio Art.

In 2008, Linda assisted with the Junior Varsity team. She was also the Head Coach for the Royal Raiders MS Team. She assisted the A5 volleyball club with the 14-3 Earl team.

In 2009, Linda was the Head Coach of the A5 14-2 team. Linda took over the Middle School Program for Walton High School and is enjoying the new responsibilities.  T
he Royal team grew so much and Coach Linda was lucky enough to watch them earn the top title of Cobb County Middle School Champions.  She is looking forward to watching these girls continue to grow and develop at the High School level.

Some interesting facts about Linda: she was born in Stockholm, Sweden and lived there until she was almost 6.  Swedish was her first language and she is still fluent in it.  She played several sports while growing up, including some unusual ones - like fencing!  She currently works at Tetra Tech Inc. in Atlanta as an Administrative Assistant.  She has a younger sister, Malin, who also played for Walton as an Outside Hitter.  Linda currently resides in Marietta.

Chris Cook - Red Raiders Head Coach

Coach_Chris_CookChris Cook enters his first year coaching middle school volleyball with the Walton program.  Coach Cook comes to us from the A5 program, where he coached in the 12 and under program leading the 11-2 team to several medal rounds and 12 Club Beast of the Southeast champions.  His most important accomplishment was the development of each player and watching them develop as players and young women.  He is USA Volleyball certified.

Coach Chris has been around youth sports as a player, referee or coach for 20 years in all sports ranging from baseball, hockey and basketball to broomball.  Chris is a distance runner at heart, who was undefeated in both the mile and two mile event for his high school career and also ran distance at the collegiate level.  He still enjoys running today, although his pace has slowed considerably.

Coach Chris has 3 daughters who all play volleyball. The youngest, Samantha and Abigail, completed their first season playing on the A5 10-2 team, the youngest team ever assembled in Georgia.  His older daughter Chloe has been playing club and school volleyball for 5 years.  Chloe's A5 teams have qualified for Nationals 3 years in a row including a top 10 finish in the 14 Open division this year.  Chloe's last two teams were led by our fearless leader Coach Suzanne.

Carl Whitmire - Silver Raiders Head Coach

Coach_Carl_WhitmireCarl is not new to Walton volleyball, but is new to coaching the Silvers. His daughter Rachel was a two time Offensive Player of the Year for Walton as the starting setter, and in 2005 he co-founded the Walton Junior Raider volleyball program with Bill Peters, introducing 5-8th graders including Marilyn Holmes, Katherine Plessy and Anouska Best, among others to the sport of competitive volleyball. In fact, Carl and Gayle have three daughters, all of whom played or play high school volleyball, so Carl has been around volleyball since 1998. Pulled off the spectator’s bench in 2004, he started coaching Rec league for Howard County in Maryland, then USAV club ball for Columbia Volleyball Club (Chesapeake Region) at the 14U level, going deep into the East Coast Championship Tournament at Penn State.

Carl is USAV IMPACT certified and has been a Head Coach for A5 Volleyball Club for two years since moving to Georgia, both years at the 12U level. He has also been coaching at A5’s Fall and Spring Youth Clinics for over two years, helping hundreds of young athletes discover and improve their volleyball skills. As Bob Westbrook has said, “We like having Carl coach at the 12U level, because after having three daughters and the hundreds of athletes at our clinics at that age level, he understands the young player’s mind set and how to reach and motivate them to develop a love of the game.”

Originally from Texas (and he bleeds burnt orange for his UT Longhorns), he’s a businessman and Dad first, not an educator and professional coach, and just loves to help young women discover and become competitive athletes. We think he’ll make a great Silvers leader at Walton. (He also grills up a killer set of steaks, burgers, chicken, shrimp, and ribs – too bad indoor volleyball doesn’t have tailgating.)
